Australian Derby Target for Exciting Polanski

Polanski, impressive winner of the Group 1 VRC Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 2, will be trained with a bid for the $2 million Australian Derby at Randwick in April as his next big target.

Trainer Robbie Laing admitted to having the Australian Derby in mind for some time for the talented son of the enigmatic but high-class Rakti, even before his big success at Flemington, confessing, ''It was always really high up there and then when I saw it had gone up to $2 million it became a No. 1 priority.''

The lightly raced three-year-old only set foot on a racecourse for the first time in September but soon showed racing live betting fans that he had plenty of ability when landing the Group 3 Jacob Park Thoroughbreds Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield in October on only his third outing, running on strongly over the 2000m trip to beat the Peter Snowden-trained favourite San Diego by a head.

Laing decided to step his rising star immediately up to the highest grade just two weeks later, a decision fully vindicated when a confident Hugh Bowman had few worries on the way around, shaking up his mount to take the lead two furlongs from home before giving him his head.

The response was immediate as Polanski pulled three-lengths clear inside the furlong to win with plenty in hand from Complacent.

Laing reports his stable star to be in great shape and raring to go once again after being given five easy weeks since his Victoria Derby success. The colt is about to come back into work in preparation for a potential summer campaign that racing betting pundits believe could take in the Australian Guineas, the Australian Cup, and finally the Australian Derby in April.
