Jewel a Stand out in Ante-post Cox Plate Market

Bookmakers in Australia and further afield are taking few chances in the ante-post market for the prestigious Sportingbet Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 26, making the unbeaten Atlantic Jewel a rock solid 9/4 market leader for the feature contest after the mare returned from a long racecourse absence to score in style.

Mark Kavanagh's five-year-old mare has a significant following amongst fans of racing betting, having won all eight racecourse appearances, three at Group 1 level, including this fine success at Caulfield when slamming Ferlax by two-and-a-half lengths in nonchalant fashion, easing down inside the final furlong under a thrilled Michael Rodd to win the Grade 1 NZ Bloodstock Memsie Stakes.

Such was the manner of her victory that the Australian form book summarised this latest win by Atlantic Jewel, saying "idling down final 50m & made a good bunch look third-rate".

The AUS$320,000 daughter of the outstanding Fastnet Rock seems equally at home at distances between 1200m and 2000m, but having her first start for just over 16 months punters allowed her to start odds against at 5/4 in the racing live betting, the biggest price available for Kavanagh's star since winning at Moonee Valley two years ago.

Suspicions that she might need the run and was being primed for even bigger prizes later in the Spring Carnival proved wholly unfounded and made bookmakers prove more than benevolent.

Keeping the winning run going was more of a relief than a joy for the winning jockey, Rodd telling reporters, "I just had to keep her out of trouble. I was kind to her because she's had a bit of time off and Kav (Mark Kavanagh) would have got up me a bit if I had have ridden her out."
