The Melbourne Cup

 The 2011 Melbourne Cup will be run on the 1st November (as usual the first Tuesday in November).

The Melbourne Cup started in the 1860's following a request to the Victorian Turf Club to stage an event which would rival any event put on by the Victorian Jockey Club. It is now one of the world's most watched horse racing events and attracts one of the largest crowds of any non-team sport and is the richest horse race in Australia.

Currently known as the Emirates Cup, the Melbourne Cup was first run in 1861. It now continues to be run on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington Racecourse.

2010 is the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup and the Victorian Racing Club is planning a year-long celebration to appropriately mark this iconic milestone.
